Hello, World!

Hello, world! We are Pebblebed. So far, we are:

  • A place for smart, curious people to work and create.
  • A venture capital firm run by some of those people.
  • An AI research lab.
  • An event space supporting all of the above and probably some more.
  • A home for builders.

At the risk of overexplaining: the name "Pebblebed" is a nuclear engineering joke. A pebble-bed reactor is a fission reactor design in which the fuel elements are little lumps of fissile material, clad with an inert moderator like graphite. One of these fuel elements is cool enough to hold in your hand, but when you make a big pile of them, they start exchanging neutrons, and you can boil water to drive a turbine (say).

In 2022, as San Francisco emerged blinking into the post-COVID sunshine, Pam and I both felt a little like ... isolated pebbles. We'd spent the pandemic between gigs, and all of our new ideas and projects just kind of radiated out into space, instead of finding their way to other neutron sources to shake still other ideas and projects loose. So we had an idea: we would obtain a space, possibly a large space, in which we could collect ... other pebbles. We might entice them with coffee, and free wifi, and a generally "vibe-y" ambience.

One of the very first Pebbles was Tammie Siew. Her experience as a venture-backed founder, and as an investor at Sequoia Southest Asia, prepared her to recognize
